Why do some Christians seem to think they have been saved by just asking?

I'm not wanting any rude answers but i just want to know who told them they are saved. I know when i was growing up as a fundamentalist i was always hearing different people in discussions or at Church claiming they were saved . Even then i would ask how they knew and who told them, and would normally be treated like i was stupid for asking or told because the spirit has not spoken to me. I've actually known some of these claimed to be saved people get angry and fight or threaten others and some times over there interpretation of the bible against there's. Is this what Jesus did just went off and left us with no visible shepherd to correct our different beliefs?
